Burkins, Ashford, Tovet, and Yeomans all take home wins after off week!

(8-4-18) Barberville, FL – After a week break from racing action Volusia Speedway Park once again came to life this past Saturday night with racing action across four classes including the Daytona Sportswear Modifieds, Mercedes Benz Vans Born to Run Street Stocks, Billy Ballew Motorsports Thunderstocks, and the Crystal Tractor and Equipment Gladiators. The modifieds were running a very unique format as they would race two heat races, one by pill draw and one by an invert. The top three in each heat would collect a cash bonus in each heat race making the racing action a little more exciting. The Thunderstocks also ran the 2nd annual "Bump & Run" knockout race which also paid a cash prize for the winner.

First up on the racing program went to the Mercedes Benz Vans Born to Run Street Stocks as Alan Peacock and Donnie Ashford would lead the field to the green flag. Peacock's Exquisite Pools and Spas #17 would get the early jump on Ashfords CLX Engineering #66, but on lap five Ashford would find his way around Peacock and cruise to victory by nearly four seconds over Peacock. Fitzgerald wins in Late Models Return to VSP, Heider, Wooten, Tovet, and Trotter take home wins!

(7-21-18) Barberville, FL – Even with the skies threatening and a rain shower that passed over the track before racing action was set to kick off, it was not enough to stop the much anticipated return of Late Model action at the "World's Fastest Half Mile" as five classes took the racing surface which included the Late Models, Mini Sprints, Street Stocks, Thunderstocks and Gladiators.

The biggest show of the night went to the Late Model division sponsored by Gary Yeomans Performance Parts. Leading the field to the green flag was Howard Stalls, and veteran David Clegg, who was making only his second start of the 2018 racing season. When the green flag dropped stalls would quickly take the race lead with Clegg settling into the runner up spot with Jason Fitzgerald in tow. As the field completed the first lap, Stalls would extend his lead over the field as Fitzgerald would make his move into the runner up spot when Clegg slipped up and out of the groove as the field began the second lap. Stalls would continue to set the pace, but Fitzgerald would begin to cut into his lead and by the seventh lap make his move to take the top spot. On lap eight a scary moment for Rookie Brenden Smith would stop the racing action. Smith would get too high on the front stretch and ride the guard rail getting into the catch fence. Smith would walk away un-injured, but a 10 foot section of the fence would need to be replaced before racing action could resume.

After the 30 minute long delay, the green flag would drop again. Fitzgerald would lead the field to green, but the man on the move was sixth starting Mark Whitener who would take over the runner up spot on lap 11 and set his sights on race leader Fitzgerald. Whitener's bid to go back to back in Late Model wins at VSP would come to a crushing end when he would roll the nose on his BWRC Icon #5 on lap 12 and retire by lap 14. This would leave Fitzgerald un-challenged for the win in his Fitz Factory Longhorn #14 crossing the line 4.776 seconds ahead of second place Kyle Vansickle. Third went to Joe Kump followed by Howard Stalls, and Shan Smith.

The racing action was jammed packed as nearly 130 race teams checked into the pit area over six classes of racing headlined by the Daytona Sportswear Modifieds and the 5th annual Dennis North Memorial for the Billy Ballew Motorsports Thunderstocks.

The event paid $1,888 to the winner honoring North's former number, 88, as well. When the green flag dropped it was Ocala's Kevin Durden who took the early race lead over the father son duo of Dustin Turnage Jr. and Sr. Durden would open up a sizable lead thru the first half of the race, but it was Charles "Bubba" Christian who had the crowd on the edge of their seats as he marched his way to the front of the field. Christian would get behind Durden on several occasions, even getting within a bumper of trying to make a pass for the lead, but it was to no avail as Durden would go on and win the main event. Volusia Speedway Park, Bubba Raceway Park, & All Tech Speedway amend Thunderstocks Rules Package for 2018 ...

(2-11-18) Barberville, FL – Track management at Volusia Speedway Park, Bubba Raceway Park, and All Tech Raceway over the past several weeks have looked over each rules book for the V8 Thunderstocks and have come to an agreement to make an amendment to the book before the season starts.

The rule in question is the shock extension rule. During the track promoters meetings for the 2018 season, Promoters from VSP, BRP, All Tech, North Florida, and Southern Georgia Speedways made an effort to make rules conform so drivers could travel to other track with minimal changes. BRP, VSP, and All Tech Raceway  had in their rule books to start the season stated to have no shock extensions, but this was an over sight as NFS and Southern Georgia Speedway  tracks have this rule in their rule book allowing drivers to run shock extensions.

This report is to clarify Bubba Raceway Park and Volusia Speedway Park, and All Tech Raceway are now allowing Shock extensions in the V8 Thunderstock class once again. We apologize for the inconvenience, but feel it was the right thing to do as all track promoters are trying to make a conformed rules book.

Thank you for your patience, and good luck in 2018

The 50th season of weekly racing will begin on Saturday, March 17 and will continue well into November on Saturday nights.

For two days; Sunday, March 11 and Monday, March 12 a special event with the AMA Flat Track Motorcycles will compete on the half-mile clay track and Tuesday, March 13 at the Volusia Speedway Park’s fifth-mile dirt oval located adjust to the half-mile speedway.

The 2018 management team will be stronger with the addition of Florida businessman and entrepreneur Tom Whipple as the new promoter. Whipple has an extensive background in racing, competing recently with his son Michael at Volusia Speedway and all the Florida dirt tracks in several different racing divisions as well as competing in ARCA, SCCA and APBA events.

“I am looking forward to helping build on the success John Allen had last year” said Tom Whipple, “I have a long history and a fond attachment to the facility and am humbled and proud to be a part of celebrating the 50 years of history and creating new memories and traditions.”

Back for a second straight year to host weekly racing is partner John Allen. Allen, no stranger to Volusia Speedway Park, got his start at eight years old when he helped pit for local teams. A successful businessman in his own right and longtime Florida resident operates a plumbing business. Aside from running his plumbing business, Allen contributed to the facility as a track sponsor.

“I’m excited to have Tom Whipple join me on this venture,” Volusia Speedway Park lease co-holder, John Allen. “Tom will be more involved on the day-to-day of the financial side of the business and will allow me to focus more on the general maintenance and assist with the promotion of the track.”

When Allen was asked what some of the biggest challenges of running the dirt track was in his first year he said: “there were some big hurdles last year, for example being on top of the rules and learning the business of running a race track – this was new for me it wasn’t like running a plumbing business, but it was definitely an experience.”

Whipple and Allen plan to continue to put a lot of time and effort into the facility but will continue to step up with big paying events for all the divisions, “we will continue to have some of the big shows, like the $5,000-to win Street Stock event, the 23rd annual Powell Memorial featuring a $5,000-to win Late Model event. Back after a one-year break is the Benny Corbin Memorial race that will pay $5,000-to win for the V8 Thunderstocks. Volusia Speedway Park’s founder Benny Corbin’s son, Kent continues to help out and is very special to us —  so having this event is big a deal.”

The major improvements made around the facility will not only benefit the major events that Volusia Speedway Parks host, such as DIRTcar Nationals but the weekly racer and fan that attend on any given Saturday Night.

Volusia Speedway Park Gets a $300,000 Safety Upgrade for DIRTcar Nationals!

(1-23-18) Barberville, FL– In honor of Volusia Speedway Park’s 50th anniversary, the World’s Fastest Half-Mile has received a major facelift over the winter months. When DIRTcar Nationals kicks off in two weeks, on February 6, racers and fans alike will benefit from over $300,000 of upgrades geared toward keeping them safe at the premier dirt racing facility in the country.

The bulk of the work done at Volusia Speedway Park went into securing the track’s perimeter with over 1200 feet of new catch fence, concrete retaining wall and guardrail.

Immediately following last year’s DIRTcar Nationals — in light of the unprecedented incidents that involved a pair of Sprint Cars clearing the existing catch fence in the pit area — speedway officials began exploring enhancements to provide a higher level of protection for both drivers and spectators.

“We have never before seen what we saw last year at the speedway,” said DIRTcar Racing President Tom Deery. “Everyone agreed that it required action, and we’ve certainly delivered. We’re excited to kick off the new season with the highest level of protection we have ever provided.”

The renovation project began with replacing 850 feet of guardrail from turn 1 to turn 2 with a new 46-inch high concrete retaining wall at the track’s edge. Built into the concrete wall sits a 17-foot catch fence with a two-foot kick out along the top. The new fence is comprised of two-by-four welded steel fence mesh and backed by a one-inch hex mesh with an additional half-inch square mesh along the bottom 30 inches. The entire fence is reinforced with steel cables running horizontally across the fence in 24- to 30-inch intervals.

Continuing the project into turns 3 and 4, a length of 386 feet of steel guardrail has been replaced or rebuilt. New posts have been embedded every six feet for added support. Atop the 60-inch guardrail (consisting of five 12-inch steel bands) sits another 12-foot catch fence.

In addition to the measures taken to increase safety, visitors will notice new signage throughout the facility. A retro look and feel celebrates 50 years of racing at the Barberville, FL racetrack, while
helping race fans and competitors better navigate the area.

The biggest event in DIRTcar racing kicks off the 2018 season as the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series, World of Outlaws Craftsman Late Model Series, All Star Circuit of Champions, Super DIRTcar Series Big-Block Modifieds, DIRTcar Late Models and DIRTcar UMP Modifieds take on the world's fastest half-mile at Volusia Speedway Park. Volusia Speedway Park Forced to Cancel Saturday (9-16-17) races after Irma

(9-13-17) Barberville, FL –Volusia Speedway Park was hit hard by Hurricane Irma on Saturday and into Sunday Morning like much of the Sunshine State. We hope everyone that was affected is safe and sound and are happy to report numerous people have reached out saying they are including the entire VSP Racing, LLC staff.

The actual racing surface was prepped well for the heavy rain and wind, but the facility does have some damage to fencing and has a lot of clean up before racing can resume, so we have decided to cancel racing action for this Saturday.

Track Management would love to thrash and resume racing and give everyone an escape from cleanup, but with racing action set for Friday it would be very difficult to get everything done even if we had good weather the next few days.

We also understand it's not just the track that has cleanup. Our race fans and race teams are in the same situation we are currently in. Fuel is at a premium right now as well as being able to order any parts needed for rebuilding a racecar or anything we may come across at the track itself that needs replaced.

Power is still not restored at the track, and we know numerous race teams that have no power and race fans that also have no power which also goes into consideration for canceling this weekend.

We will reschedule the Iron Man Race along with the rain out Feature from 8-5 for the Thunderstocks and the Gladiator Challenge Series Event for the gladiators as well. Regular season racing action for Saturday will not be made up however.

We appreciate everyone's patience as we work to move on from Hurricane Irma.

Showers Jr. wins the first Iron Man Race of the year, Clem takes home the Florida Late Model Win!

(4-29-17) Barberville, FL – It was another beautiful night of racing action at the "World's Fastest Half Mile" on Saturday night as four divisions of racing took center stage with the Allen Plumbing Iron Man Series Race #1 headlining the night for the V8 Thunderstocks. Also in action supporting the six race mini series were the Medical Arts Labs Florida Late Models, Mercedes Benz Vans Born to Run Hobby Stocks, and the Allen Tractor Services Mini Stocks.

First up on the night went to the Allen Tractor Services Mini Stocks as William Hampton and Jake Hampton led the field to green. Jake would get the jump over William and go on to lead the first several laps of the feature event. The man on the move, however, was Brad Fender as he would use the high line to go from fourth to second and set his sights on Jake Hampton for the lead. The two would battle side by side for three laps before Fender would finally get a good run on the high side and take the lead. From that point on it was all Fender even as a late race caution would come out, no one could touch Fender as he would win his third feature in a row for the 2017 season. Michael Ridgeway Jr. came in second followed by Jake Hampton, Chris Thomas and Rich Thomas.

As the race wore on Fender would show his muscle opening up nearly a half track lead over the field at one point during the race. Ridgeway would experience mechanical issues around the half way point leaving the race for Fender to win. With just three laps to go, however, Fender would blow a radiator and experience mechanical issues of his own. Fender would roll the dice and stay on the track as he had nearly lapped the field and coasted home to his second win in a row. Chris Thomas would finish second followed by Rich Thomas in third.

Volusia Speedway Park Facebook page set to move in the coming weeks

(3-23-17) Barberville, FL – Volusia Speedway Park Management would like to make the formal announcement of a social media change. In the next two weeks VSP Racing, LLC Facebook will be shut down as we have been asked by DIRTcar Racing to head the Volusia Speedway Park main page instead. We know there will be some struggle to change pages, but we encourage everyone to please go to https://www.facebook.com/volusiaspeedway/ and like the new Facebook page. Volusia Speedway Park Makes rule changes in Gladiator Division for the 2017 Race Season.

March, 3rd 2017 (Barberville, FL) – After weeks of deliberating and discussion, Volusia Speedway Park Officials have made the decision to make three rules changes to the 2017 racing season in the gladiator division. Please note, there have been numerous rumors about these changes, the following is the official statement on such changes.

Rule Change 1: Race teams which have 6 cylinder engine car may run at VSP for the 2017 Racing season. If you choose to run a car with a 6 cylinder engine, nothing larger than 3.0 liter will be allowed. 3.1 or higher are ILLEGAL. We also have noted in our rule book this will be the final year 6 cylinder cars. After the 2017 racing season 6 cylinders will no longer be able to run with the gladiators as the division is going back to an all 4cyl. Class. We made an exception for this year since many teams had built cars, let this be your notice on the changes for the 2018 season. We will also remind everyone throughout the beginning of the year.

Rule Change 2: After discussion for several weeks with Aero Racing Wheels, we have decided to allow Race Wheels in the Gladiator division. If you choose to run racing wheels, you will only be allowed to run the following Part # from Aero Racing Wheels:
Aero 44-164055 14” x 6” steel wheel 4 on 100mm or Aero 44-165055 14” x 6” steel wheel 5 on 100mm
Please note this is the only racing wheel you are allowed to run. This type has an offset that of a factory steel wheel. THIS RULE WILL BE ENFORCED.

Rule Change 3: To be fair to all of our competitors and the rising cost of actually building a racecar, the claimer for this division has been increased to $1500. Please note the only change to the claimer rule is the amount to claim. Refer to your rule book on how to claim a car.

Please note these rules have been added to the rule book and can be found online at www.vspracing.com by clicking the rules page and selecting the gladiator division. All changes are marked in RED and UNDERLINED for your convenience.

Good luck to all of the teams this year and we will see you on the 18th for opening night!

Fifth-starting Hawkins of Fairmont, WV quickly drove to second on lap four and then took the lead from Krup while racing against the cushion in the outside lane.

Hoffman was able to get to the back bumper of Hawkins’ No.13 on a pair of restarts at laps 12 and 16. Hawkins used the momentum of the outside lane to his advantage though and maintained the lead while Hoffman kept pace on the inside line.

“Yeah, 365 days later we start the season off in the best case scenario,” said Johnson, rehashing on his team’s troubles last season. “It’s a long season, and you need to condition for it. For Johnson’s four World of Outlaws wins last season, Johnson brought his son up on stage to wave their index finger in the air symbolizing “No.1.” This time Johnson scaled the wing of his No. 41 Priority Aviation Services, LLC/ Mesilla Valley Transportation Maxim car solo, but dropped back down to high-fives and hugs from his crew. Johnson, who was involved in a horrific wreck earlier in the week, opted to withdraw from the All-Star Circuit of Champions finale Thursday night.  But one day later, consistently bested 35 other cars on sprint car racing’s biggest stage.

Ruhlman Rallies for Second Career Gator Win. Gravel takes All Star Win!

BARBERVILLE, FL – February 17, 2017 – Brian Ruhlman devised a perfect plot and forced Ken Schrader from his preferred line as he engineered a pass in the outside groove with two laps to go for his first win of the 46th Annual DIRTcar Nationals at Volusia Speedway Park on Thursday night.

After passing Schrader, the Clarklake, Mich. driver took the checkered flag by over two seconds for his second career Volusia win, extending his point lead in the week long chase for a Big Gator trophy.

Ruhlman started fourth in the 20-lap main event and ran second to the polesitter Schrader until he took advantage of a lap 17 restart. Ruhlman showed the nose of his No.49 to the inside of Schrader’s No.9 several times before the final restart on lap 17, which he revealed was a setup move to make the winning pass.

“Kenny’s a smart racer and he’s one of my heroes,” Ruhlman said in Victory Lane. “He was in the rubber and I had to get him out of the rubber to where I could pass him. I kept showing him the nose on the bottom so he would move down to the bottom, then I could roll the top [lane]. To say I shnookered Kenny Schrader is pretty cool.”

Schrader, a Fenton, Mo. native, earned his first top-five finish of the week, outdueling Tuesday night winner and second-place starter Jacob Hawkins of Fairmont, WV in the process. Schrader shook off Ruhlman’s initial challenge, but knew he couldn’t hold him off until the checkered flag. CLICK HERE for full story

Nick Hoffman is perfect on night two as Schatz wins over hard charging Kyle Larson!

BARBERVILLE, FL – February 15, 2017 – Nick Hoffman led every lap he raced en route to his first win of the 46th Annual DIRTcar Nationals in DIRTcar UMP Modified action at Volusia Speedway Park on Wednesday night. The Mooresville, N.C. driver paced all 20 laps of the main event to earn his eighth career Volusia victory.

“This will just add to my pond. I have eight of them now,” Hoffman said in Victory Lane as he received his Gator trophy. “Nothing went wrong tonight. Last night was kind of a struggle, but it was awesome tonight. I knew the racetrack was going to be in my favor tonight. I just tried to hug the infield wall and make laps as smooth as I could.”

Hoffman was flawless in the bottom groove and proved too strong even for the field of talented veterans. He held off Arnold, Mo. driver Kenny Wallace in the opening laps and David Stremme of South Bend, Ind. following the final restart of the night on lap 17.

“I knew a couple of those guys would try the top, but most of the time here you’re married to the bottom,” Hoffman said. “I knew if I hit my marks those last two laps it was going to be hard to get around me.”

Stremme was happy to earn a podium finish after starting seventh and recording a sixth-place result on Tuesday night. However, the driver of the No.35 was adamant his team can still find more speed.

“We were just a little bit off last night and we’re just going to keep working on some stuff,” Stremme said. “Hats off to Nick. He was the best car last night and tonight. We’ll keep digging. There are a lot of great cars here. We had to pass a lot to get up here.”

Hawkins soars to DIRTcar Nationals opening night victory!

BARBERVILLE, FL – February 15, 2017 – Jacob Hawkins of Fairmont, WV led all 20 laps of the DIRTcar UMP Modified feature to earn his first career Gator trophy and win at Volusia Speedway Park on night one of the DIRTcar Nationals.

Hawkins led the opening lap after starting on the outside of the front row and held off Clarklake, MI-native Brian Ruhlman over the final 10 laps to earn his spot in Victory Lane. Hawkins attributed his success to car owner Junior Nolan who has accompanied him there to Florida Florida in search of a Gator over the last 12 years.

“It hasn’t been from lack of effort,” said Hawkins. “Junior’s given me good equipment every time. It takes a lot of luck down here. There’s so many good cars, you get to run with guys like Ken Schrader, Kenny Wallace and the top talent in the Modifieds. It’s a great feeling [to win],”

Hawkins said. Hawkins overcame a lap 12 restart but had to deal with Ruhlman until the final corner. Ruhlman had the advantage in turn two, but Hawkins had an answer for the driver of the No.49 off turn four.

“I had something for him down in [turn] one and two, but I couldn’t figure out what to do with them down [in three and four]. I was hoping I could make him make a mistake, but I think he knows I’ll always leave him a lane,”Ruhlman said following his runner-up finish.

Arnold, MO driver Kenny Wallace raced his way to a podium finish after starting ninth and was content to finish third behind Hawkins and Ruhlman, he said.

“It was a great job by my team. This is a brand new car. We just unloaded it today,” Wallace said. “We learned some adjustments to make tonight, but when you have Jacob Hawkins and Brian Ruhlman, these are two of the best the United States has to offer. They’re fast.”

Earlier in the night, Ruhlman set fast time in qualifying time trials with a lap of 18.747 seconds around the half-mile Volusia oval. He was also a heat race winner along with Hawkins, Will Krup, Jeff Leka, Ray Bollinger and Scott Kincaid.

Reigning DIRTcar UMP Modified DIRTcar Nationals champion Nick Hoffman raced his way into the 20-lap feature from the first Last Chance Showdown. Contact in Hoffman’s heat race forced him to battle his way in to the show through the back door, but did so in convincing fashion as he advanced from 13th to win. Billy Workman Jr. of Canbury, OH and Kyle Strickler of Mooresville, NC both won Last Chance Showdowns from the pole starting position.

The UMP Modifieds return to action on Wednesday alongside the Arctic Cat All-Star Circuit of Champions for night two of the DIRTcar Nationals.

The DeLeon Spring speedway is a half-mile, clay oval, often referred to as the “World’s Fastest Half-Mile.”  Though its name, size and style have changed throughout the years, it has consistently operated as a weekly race track.

“For me, the Speedway is my joy – to bring all these drivers and fans together,” said John Allen. “A lot of people come out of the wood-work to help out, which is huge. We try to help out the local community and just bring everyone together. I get joy out of giving people somewhere to go on a Saturday night.”

Whitener would waste no time getting to the front as he would use the high line to go from the tail of the field to fourth in just three laps. Whitener would then waste no time getting to the point and never looking back just past the races half way point and go onto win the coveted $2,000 top prize.
